Personal Statement

To me, fashion is a passion that takes me to different levels of self-expression. I love how it can be inspired from cultures, experiences and everything around you. Details of every pattern can make an outfit look unique and enhanced. Entering this fast paced industry these days you need to poses a range of skills and personal qualities, all of which I have. I consider myself to be highly creative individual who has the ability to envision a finished product before production and what people are going to wear from 18-24 months from now. My experience to date has also given me a sense of competition which pushes me to continually strive for doing better than my peers.

I want to study this degree because I feel university will spread my wings to learn more about what I love as well as experiencing something totally new. This course will also give me the building blocks to do this, and to enter the world of fashion.

My interests for this course were planted by my grandmother, who worked as professional tailor for over 55 years. I was always fascinated to see her transforming newspaper pattern cuttings into beautifully made garments which she’d then decorate with beads and different hand embroidery. But during my textile and Art GCSE my interest increased and I developed a real passion for working with different textures, materials and creating new designs. That also made me consider making a career out of my creative skills.

Throughout the course I’m currently studying I have learned new skills and developed the skills that I already had for fashion. The area that mostly expanded my knowledge was pattern cutting; it was the most challenging process in my garment construction in the start but now I enjoy pushing myself to learn new and improved skills. Alongside fashion I also have a keen interest in computers after creating some my design on Photoshop and illustrator; I've learned new skills by developing my own website with different software’s and features. I have also discovered and joined array of self-promoting sites such as blogger, Flickr and Pinterest.

During my summer holidays I volunteered in the wedding fair, organised by The Eastern Pavilion Banqueting Hall. The fair was set up to advertise the leading Asian high end fashion designers, make-up artists, mehndi artists, jewelers and photographers which presented their work on the catwalk. My role was to assist backstage, that gave me a good experience within fashion because I interacted with different fashion designers and make-up artists. In the start of my current course my work was recognised by The Pretty Nostalgic Magazine, because I created a vintage garment that won second place within their competition.

I have also participated in a fashion show that was organised in college, which involved a collaboration with other departments such as media, photography, make-up and hair. For this show I designed a catwalk dress that was made from the theme of Circus Cabaret.

My designs have a many influences from my previous life experiences and everything that’s around me, such the clothing from my religious boarding school have majorly effected the style of my garments. The vivid colours that I commonly use are inspired from the beautiful and almost surreal landscapes within my home country. I believe this course you offer will give me drive and confidence to learn fashion as a whole, it will also allow me to realise my career ambitions.

I’m fully dedicated to this course, as I have carefully considered the elements of time and finance required at this stage and I am willing to commit to academic life.

Review Week 4

In this meeting I couldn't attend due an appointment, for that reason I made contact with him through messaging and informed him about my situation and what I wanted to discuss with him. however, in this meeting I wanted to show him the different patterns that I have created in my sketch book for textiles and I wanted him to choose the patterns he thinks suit the magazine best. Then from there I wanted to redraw those patterns on a larger paper so he could take images of it or I could draw them digitally if he thinks that's a better idea. I also wanted to ask if he likes the patterns I have already sent him.

This the image of the text message that I sent to my photographer.

This image shows the emails that Ive sent to my photographer of my work.

This was my photographer reply after I sent him my work.
